Security Best Practices

While VirtualBank takes great care to protect the confidentiality and integrity of your personal information, there are additional steps you can take to supplement the security controls that protect your VirtualBank account.

Your VirtualBank Account Password
VirtualBank requires the passwords used to authenticate to online accounts have the following characteristics:

  • Minimum of seven (7) characters in length.
  • Contain alpha [abc] and numeric [123] characters.
  • Contain either a combination of upper and lowercase alphabet characters [aBc] or special characters [#%&].

An example of a password conforming to VirtualBank’s password policy is V1rtualB@nk

Additionally, you can further increase the strength of your passwords by applying the following recommendations:

  • Never use your name, VirtualBank account username, VirtualBank account number, date of birth, social security number, or other personal information as your password.
  • Avoid using dictionary words in your passwords.
  • If you write down your password, avoid writing your username or a description of the password’s purpose. Be sure to store the password in a secure location.
  • Change your password regularly. VirtualBank recommends clients change their passwords every 90 days.
  • Avoid using your VirtualBank password for other systems, Internet websites, or other online financial accounts.
  • Never share your password with anyone. Passwords are required only for online access to your VirtualBank accounts. VirtualBank will never request your password in order to serve you.

Your Personal Computer Security
VirtualBank employs a layered security model to ensure the information you have entrusted with us remains secure. Layered security implements several levels of security around your private information. Each level operates as an independent barrier for your information, thereby making it more difficult for someone to compromise your account. By using a similar approach on your personal computer, you can dramatically improve the protection of any personal files stored on your computer.

Operating System and Internet Browser Patches
No matter what operating system or Internet browser you’re using, chances are there have been security related fixes released by the vendor to address security vulnerabilities in their software. Neglecting these updates places any personal information on your computer at risk of compromise by a malicious individual.

VirtualBank recommends you check your operating system and Internet browser vendor’s website and install any applicable security patches to your system.

Antivirus Software
Computer viruses, worms, and trojans are programs that can destroy files or worse, steal your personal information. These programs are generally downloaded inadvertently by the computer operator while browsing the Internet or opening email attachments.

To protect your computer from these programs, VirtualBank recommends installing an antivirus program. Antivirus software actively scans your computer for malicious programs and removes them before they cause damage.

Whatever antivirus software is installed, it’s important to ensure the software is maintained to date with the latest update files from the antivirus vendor. This ensures the antivirus is able to detect and clean the latest computer viruses, worms, and trojans.

Personal Firewalls
Automated scans are constantly scanning the Internet in search of vulnerable computers that can be compromised. Once your computer has been compromised the malicious party can use your computer for their purposes, which could involve performing illegal activities.

A personal firewall program actively monitors your computer’s Internet connection and effectively denies unsolicited scans or communication originating from the Internet. To ensure the integrity of your computer, VirtualBank recommends installing a personal firewall program.

Commercial and free personal firewall products are available from various software companies. Many home network routers also include firewall functionality. If you’re unsure whether your router includes this functionality, contact your router’s manufacturer for more information.

Your VirtualBank Account Access
Implementing layered security controls isn’t limited to antivirus software and personal firewalls. Ultimately, your personal security habits function as a security level as well. Here are some additional recommendations to further ensure the confidentiality and integrity of your VirtualBank account.

  • Avoid accessing your VirtualBank account from a public computer, such as those located in Internet cafés, libraries, or other publicly shared locations.
  • Never click on links sent to you by email that appear to direct you to the VirtualBank website or your VirtualBank accounts.
  • Never sign into your VirtualBank account unless the web address displayed in your Internet browser window starts with ‘https’, and the padlock icon is displayed in the lower right hand corner of the Internet browser window.
  • Never leave your computer unattended while logged into your VirtualBank account.
  • Always log off your VirtualBank account once you have completed your transactions.
